One of the most famous sites in the world, Stonehenge is composed of earthworks surrounding a circular setting of large standing stones. It is at the centre of the most dense complex of Neolithic and Bronze Age monuments in England, including several hundred burial mounds.'><img src='http://yarets.com/wp-content/gallery/isla-de-pascua/thumbs/thumbs_stounjedge.jpg' alt='Stonehenge' class='ngg-singlepic ngg-none' /></a></td>
<td><a class="shutterset_" href='http://yarets.com/wp-content/gallery/isla-de-pascua/pascua11.jpg' title='2010 - Easter Island (Rapa Nui, Spanish: Isla de Pascua) is a Polynesian island in the southeastern Pacific Ocean, at the southeastern most point of the Polynesian triangle. A special territory of Chile annexed in 1888, Easter Island is widely famous for its 887 extant monumental statues, called moai, created by the early Rapanui people. It is a World Heritage Site (as determined by UNESCO) with much of the island protected within the Rapa Nui National Park. In recent times the island has served as a cautionary tale about the cultural and environmental dangers of overexploitation. Ethnographers and archaeologists now argue that the introduction of diseases carried by European colonizers and the slave raiding, that devastated the population in the 1800s had a much greater social than environmental impact. Introduced animals—first rats and then sheep—were largely responsible for the island's loss of native flora.'><img src='http://yarets.com/wp-content/gallery/isla-de-pascua/thumbs/thumbs_pascua11.jpg' alt='Isla de Pascua' class='ngg-singlepic ngg-none' /></a></td>
<td><a class="shutterset_" href='http://yarets.com/wp-content/gallery/2005/17_0.jpg' title='Chichen Itza (pronounced from Yucatec Maya) is a large pre-Columbian archaeological site built by the Maya civilization located in the northern center of the Yucatán Peninsula, in the Yucatán state, present-day Mexico. Chichen Itza was a major focal point in the northern Maya lowlands from the Late Classic through the Terminal Classic and into the early portion of the Early Postclassic period. The site exhibits a multitude of architectural styles, from what is called “Mexicanized” and reminiscent of styles seen in central Mexico to the Puuc style found among the Puuc Maya of the northern lowlands. The presence of central Mexican styles was once thought to have been representative of direct migration or even conquest from central Mexico, but most contemporary interpretations view the presence of these non-Maya styles more as the result of cultural diffusion. The ruins of Chichen Itza are federal property, and the site’s stewardship is maintained by Mexico’s Instituto Nacional de Antropología e Historia (National Institute of Anthropology and History, INAH). The land under the monuments had been privately-owned until March 29, 2010, when it was purchased by the state of Yucatan.'><img src='http://yarets.com/wp-content/gallery/2005/thumbs/thumbs_17_0.jpg' alt='Chichen Itza' class='ngg-singlepic ngg-none' /></a></td>
